About
Visual Artist Henrike Gootjes uses art and stories to bring attention to the new connections being created between people and places.
Her inspiration comes from life itself which according to Henrike is "a mix of unfair bitterness and enchanting, undeserved sweetness". Her projects bring about the kind of change of perspective that happens when the most unexpected connections are made. She combines techniques such as knitting, cross-stich, crochet, gardening, tattoo-art as well as fictional and personal stories. The feminine, close, mundane and artisan process is a metaphor for the process of designing and changing the world. The art is a vehicle to bring warmth, humour, lightness, comfort and connection even when futile and short.
Henrike Gootjes graduated in 2002 from Minerva, Fine Arts Academy in Groningen, The Netherlands. She worked as a lecturer at Minerva, GHBO, Academy Pedagogic NHL/RUG, HS collective in Brisbane, Australia, Dort College in Iowa, USA. And the international school of Montpellier, France.
She recently finished a iMAE a Master program at ArtEZ, innovative cross-disciplinary course of study that aims to utilize the creative potential of the arts to engage with challenges of contemporary life across the globe.

Artist statement:
‘I hope my artwork re-enforces the sense of belonging and power, and helps the viewer find strength in the midst of unsertainty.’
Henrike’s artistic projects create and strengthen social structures and use art as a vehicle to cultivate togetherness. She uses artisan techniques such as knitting, cross-stitching, and crochet in a contemporary, monumental way and often allows the audience to partake in the art-projects.
She said ‘In our time of digitalization, individualism, globalization and mass production, the process of making something by hand has almost vanished. I feel a renewed longing to touch, braid, tie; to create slowly, loop by loop, stitch by stitch; to connect and create a product. I will accept brokenness but not the status quo and believe that many small acts make a significant impact on restoring and redeeming beauty, dignity and life.’
In the project ‘The Survivors Swansong’ for the Museum on the Ilse of Vlieland (NL), Henrike Gootjes explored tales of survival and how this impacts ones life. She washed ashore on the Ilse in search of stories of survival. She motivated people on the island to document and cultivate their survival stories. This resulted in many stories being shared, poems written, a knitted sweater, artwork and a shanty-song-festival. Henrike documented some stories on a blog and made a series of works of art.
She worked on a series of artworks responding to conflict and displaced people entitled ‘Oceans, skies and seas’.
In the project 'Soft borders of Northern Ireland', a textile project, she explored Brexit, borders and belonging, This project was on show at different Festivals and accommodated dialogue about identity and belonging. Henrike continues the research about borders and belonging and will travel to Estonia, Malta and Jordan to collect stories and textiles to develop more understanding of the mechanisms of belonging and the role of textiles and tactility in the process of identification.

Je souhaite que mes œuvres d'art permettent de recréer le sentiment d'appartenance, de puissance et aide le spectateur à trouver ses forces au milieu de l'incertitude.
Les projets artistiques de Henrike créent et renforcent les structures sociales et utilisent l'art comme moyen de cultiver la solidarité. Elle utilise des techniques artisanales telles que le tricot, le point de croix et le crochet d'une façon contemporaine et offre souvent au public la possibilité de participer à ses projets artistiques.
Elle a déclaré ce qui suit : « À notre époque numérique où l'individualisme, la mondialisation et la production de masse règnent en maître, l’acte de créer quelque chose à la main demeure presque inexistant. Je suis hantée par un désir renouvelé pour toucher, tresser, ficeler afin de créer lentement, boucle en boucle, point par point et tisser des liens pour créer un produit.
J’accepte d’avoir des hauts et des bas, mais je n’accepterai jamais le statu quo et je ne cesserai de croire que de nombreux petits gestes ont un impact significatif sur la restauration et la rédemption de la beauté, la dignité et la vie ».

Dans le projet « The Survivors Swansong » pour le Musée de la Ilse de Vlieland (NL), Henrike Gootjes a exploré des histoires de survie et leurs impacts sur la vie.
Elle a échoué sur le rivage de l’île pour explorer des histoires de survie. Elle y a rencontré des personnes motivées pour documenter leurs vies et de mettre en relief leurs histoires de survie. Cette expérience a donné la vie à de nombreuses histoires partagées, à des poèmes écrits, à la création d’un pull en tricot, à des illustrations et au festival des chants de marins. Henrike a établi des histoires sur un blog et a fait une série de 7 œuvres d'art.
Elle travaille actuellement sur une série d'œuvres qui ont répondu à des conflits et des personnes déplacées intitulés «Des océans, des cieux et des mers» et la performance-art ‘Tableau de Merci’.
Henrike Gootjes est diplômée en 2002 de Minerva, l’Académie des Beaux Arts à Groningen, aux Pays-Bas. Depuis l’obtention de son diplôme, elle s’est lancée dans le domaine artistique. Elle a travaillé à l’Académie des Beaux Arts Minerva, GHBO Zwolle, l’Académie Pédagogique NHL / RUG, HS collective à Brisbane, en Australie et Dort College dans l'Iowa, aux États-Unis. Elle vit et travaille actuellement à Montpellier, en France.

‘Ik hoop dat mijn werk het gevoel van inbedding en kracht versterkt, en de toeschouwer helpt om kracht te vinden in het midden van onzekerheid’
De artistieke projecten van Henrike creeeren en versterken sociale structuren. Zij gebruikt handwerktechnieken zoals breien, borduren en haken op een hedendaagse, monumentale manier en laat het publiek meewerken in het ontstaan en bestaan van de kunstprojecten.
Henrike zegt ‘In onze tijd van digitalisatie, individualisatie, globalisatie en massaproductie is het handgemaakte proces bijna verdwenen. Ik heb een hernieuwd verlangen om aan te raken, te vlechten, te knopen, om langzaam, lus voor lus, steek voor steek iets te maken. Om mij in te zetten, te verbinden en iets te maken. Iets te maken van wat er op ons af komt, wereldleed, ongerechtigheid, drama's. Ik ben bereid gebrokenheid te accepteren maar niet de onveranderelijke status Quo en geloof dat vele kleine daden een groot verschil kunnen maken in laten bloeien van schoonheid, waardigheid en leven.
In de tentoonstelling ‘Het lied van de geredde drenkeling/ The Survivors Swansong’ voor het Museum op Vlieland(NL), verkende Henrike Gootjes verhalen van schipbreuk en overleven en welk invloed dit had op levens. Ze spoelde letterlijk aan op het eiland in haar zoektocht naar de verhalen. Ze nodigde de eilandbewoners uit hun verhalen te documenten en cultiveren. Dit resulteerde in vele verhalen, een gebreide trui, gedichten, tekeningen en een zeeliederen-festival. Henrike documenteerde de verhalen en maakte een nieuwe serie van 7 werken.
Ze maakte een serie werken waarin ze reageert op conflict en migratie getiteld: ‘Oceans, skies and seas'.
Tijdens haar artist in residency in Noord Ierland onderzocht ze Brexit, grenzen en verbondenheid en maakte over dit thema een textiel kunstproject met de titel 'Soft Borders of Northern Ireland'. Dit project werd getoond op verschillende festivals en creerde en plaats voor dialoog en ontmoeting over identiteit en gevoel van verbinding. Henrike zet het onderzoek naar grenzen en verbondenheid door tijdens reizen naar Estland, Malta en Jordanie. Daar organiseerd ze workshops, en verzameld ze verhalen en textiel om zo meer te begrijpen van de mechanismen van verbondenheid en de rol van textiel in processen van identificatie.
Henrike Gootjes studeerde in 2002 af bij Academie Minerva in Groningen. Sindsdien werk zij als kunstenaar. Tevens werkte zij als docent bij o.a. Minerva, GHBO, Academsche Pabo NHL/RUG, HS collective in Brisbane, Australia en Dort College in Iowa, USA. Onlangs ronde ze de Master IMAE af aan ArtEZ, een innovatief, interdisciplinair studieprogramma dat het artistieke potentieel van de kunst wil inzetten om de uitdagingen van het hedendaagse leven wereldwijd het hoofd te bieden. Het programma inspireert kunstenaars praktijkgerichte methodologieën te ontwikkelen die een tegengeluid vormen voor verhalen die uitnodigen tot wantrouwen en conflict. Ze woont en werkt in Nederland.
